Three Seas Momentum: Slovakia and Poland are aligning on practical Three Seas Initiative projects, focusing on transport and energy links with a stronger “return on investment” approach. Rail Freight Expansion: METRANS will launch a new intermodal rail service from Poznań to Gdynia from 2 September, connecting Slovakia and the region to Baltic port capacity. Logistics Investment: FedEx is expanding in Slovakia with a new logistics centre in Košice, aiming to streamline operations and support regional supply chains. Security & Trade Pressure: Ukraine’s port closure is expected to hit Ukrainian agriculture hardest, raising fears for regional grain flows into Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Azerbaijan Ties: Slovakia and Azerbaijan signed an agreement to exchange and protect classified information, underlining growing energy and defence cooperation.
Energy & Industry: Slovak power producer Slovenske elektrarne commissioned the largest battery storage facility in Slovakia at the former Novaky coal plant, delivering 36 MW / 72 MWh for grid frequency control and better renewable integration, backed by a nearly €3.7m Recovery and Resilience Plan grant. Logistics & Exports: FedEx opened a new logistics centre in Košice (nearly 1,000 m², 18 pickup-and-delivery docks) to speed up international shipments and support Slovak SMEs expanding abroad. Rail & Trade Links: DB Cargo launched a representative office in Kyiv to coordinate multimodal transport and help connect Ukraine’s economy to European supply chains. Aviation & Defence Industry: Embraer delivered the first C-390 Millennium to the Czech Air Force, while Embraer and Anduril signed an MoU to integrate the Barracuda-500M cruise missile for palletized launches from the aircraft. EU Competition/Media: The European Commission cleared the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery merger with conditions tied to competition concerns in film distribution. Agriculture: Sugar beet growers in Slovakia will receive €12.48m in 2026 support, with the coupled payment rising to €632.80 per hectare. EU Policy Watch: Eurostat data shows EU environmental tax revenue hit €371.9bn in 2024 (+6.1%), while Slovakia’s environmental tax receipts fell 6.1%.
