Germany Calls on Putin to Show Commitment to Ukraine Peace Talks
Putin must “prove whether there is a willingness for peace and a willingness to negotiate on the Russian side,” Wadephul said during talks with Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar in Bratislava.
“Of course, the best way to underscore this is by taking steps in that direction from the outset,” the minister said, according to reports.
Wadephul was asked whether Putin’s attendance at the G20 gathering in Florida in December should depend on Moscow agreeing to a limited ceasefire in the Black Sea that would help restore Ukrainian grain shipments disrupted by the war.
The German foreign minister said the invitation would serve as a test of Russia’s readiness to engage in negotiations.
He argued that Moscow could demonstrate such readiness “by taking steps in that direction from the outset” -- including announcing a Black Sea ceasefire “that would allow for the urgently needed grain exports.”
