Slovakia Halts Electricity Aid to Ukraine Amid Druzhba Pipeline Tensions
Fico said on the US social media company X that he acted on a warning issued Saturday: if oil flows through the pipeline were not restored by Monday, Slovakia’s state transmission company SEPS would stop emergency power support to Ukraine.
"In January 2026 alone, these emergency deliveries needed to stabilize the Ukrainian energy grid were twice as high as for the entire year 2025," Fico noted.
The Druzhba pipeline, a critical route for Russian oil, was disrupted after an incident on Jan. 27 that Kyiv attributed to Russian drone attacks. Hungarian and Slovak officials, however, accused Ukraine of intentionally delaying the pipeline’s restart to gain political leverage.
Following the halt in oil shipments, both Hungary and Slovakia suspended diesel fuel deliveries to Ukraine in response.
