Slovak PM Says Ukraine-Russia War Has ‘No Military Solution’
He criticized the repeated use of sanctions against Moscow, questioning their effectiveness and suggesting that diplomacy should take precedence over punitive measures. “The conflict in Ukraine has no military solution. It has no military solution,” he said, noting that the European approach should prioritize peace initiatives rather than endless sanction packages.
Fico also highlighted economic pressures facing Slovakia amid the war, pointing to losses from changes in gas transit and accusing Kyiv of politicizing energy supplies. “We made 500 million euros per year just on transit fees,” he said, adding that gas and oil supplies from Ukraine toward Slovakia and Hungary have become tools of political leverage and blackmail.
The Slovak leader’s remarks underscore a growing debate in Europe over how to balance support for Ukraine with the pursuit of diplomatic channels and economic stability in the region.
